INmune Bio Reports Positive MRI Findings in Phase 2 Alzheimer's Study
INmune Bio has reported new Phase 2 clinical trial data indicating that its experimental Alzheimer’s drug, XPro1595, may help protect important brain tissue associated with memory and thinking.
The company used an advanced MRI scan to measure the health of the brain’s white matter, which acts like the brain’s communication network, helping different parts of the brain send signals to one another. Damage to this network is common in Alzheimer’s disease and is believed to contribute to memory loss and cognitive decline.
After 24 weeks of treatment, patients who received XPro1595 showed significantly better white matter health than those who received a placebo. The benefit was even stronger in patients with higher levels of inflammation, which is becoming an increasingly important target in Alzheimer’s research.
Providing proof
One of the biggest challenges in Alzheimer’s drug development is proving that a treatment is actually affecting the disease process inside the brain. These MRI results suggest XPro1595 may be doing exactly that by helping preserve the brain’s communication pathways.
While the trial’s main goal was not met across all patients, previous analyses suggested the drug worked best in Alzheimer’s patients with elevated inflammation. The new MRI data provide additional evidence supporting that theory.
