Experimental LSD Therapy Shows Strong Results in Late-Stage Anxiety Trial
Definium Therapeutics announced today positive Phase 3 results for DT120 ODT, an LSD-based therapy being developed to treat generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).
Unlike traditional anti-anxiety medications that are taken daily, DT120 is designed as a single supervised dose intended to produce lasting therapeutic benefits.
In the Phase 3 Voyage study, patients who received a 100-microgram dose experienced an average 11.6-point reduction on the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale after 12 weeks, compared with 6.2 points for those receiving placebo. Improvements appeared within two days of treatment and were maintained throughout the study. The therapy was also generally well tolerated, with most side effects occurring on the day of dosing and no new safety concerns or increase in suicidal behavior reported.
The results are notable because they add to a growing body of evidence that psychedelic compounds may have therapeutic value beyond depression. Much of the recent attention has focused on psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression and PTSD, but anxiety disorders affect tens of millions of people worldwide and remain one of the most common mental health conditions. Many existing treatments require daily medication, can take weeks to become effective, and don’t work for everyone.
Definium’s positive data also marks the company’s second successful Phase 3 study for DT120, following encouraging results in major depressive disorder earlier this year. Another late-stage anxiety trial, known as Panorama, is expected to report topline results next month. If those findings are also positive, the company could move closer to seeking regulatory approval.
Whether DT120 ultimately reaches the market remains to be seen. But the broader trend is becoming difficult to ignore. Psychedelic medicines are steadily moving beyond early academic research and into large, late-stage clinical trials. With multiple companies now reporting positive Phase 3 data, what was once considered a fringe area of medicine is increasingly becoming part of the mainstream drug development pipeline.
