BioVie Advances Experimental Parkinson’s Treatment Into Next Stage
BioVie announced the completion of enrollment in its Phase 2 SUNRISE-PD trial studying bezisterim (NE3107) in patients with early-stage Parkinson’s disease.
The study enrolled 60 patients who have not yet started traditional Parkinson’s medications, such as levodopa.
The goal of the study is to determine whether bezisterim can help improve movement problems and other Parkinson’s symptoms while potentially slowing disease progression.
Parkinson’s disease occurs when nerve cells in the brain gradually deteriorate, leading to tremors, stiffness, balance problems, and difficulty with movement. Current treatments can help manage symptoms, but they generally do not stop the disease from progressing over time.
BioVie believes bezisterim may help by reducing inflammation in the brain and improving insulin signaling, both of which researchers increasingly believe may play a role in neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. The drug is designed to cross the blood-brain barrier and directly target those inflammatory pathways.
The company has already reported encouraging results in an earlier Parkinson’s study involving patients with more advanced disease who were already taking levodopa. According to BioVie, patients receiving bezisterim alongside standard treatment showed improvements in motor control and morning symptoms, with relatively few serious side effects reported.
SUNRISE-PD also used a hybrid design that allowed some patients to participate remotely instead of traveling regularly to clinics. That can be important for Parkinson’s patients, many of whom face mobility challenges that make traditional clinical trial participation difficult.
Topline data is expected in the first half of 2026.
