Autobahn Therapeutics Earns FDA Fast Track Status for Bipolar Depression Drug
Autobahn Therapeutics has announced that the FDA has granted Fast Track designation for elunetirom, its lead experimental therapy for the adjunctive treatment of bipolar depression.
This designation comes as Autobahn advances elunetirom through Phase 2 development in bipolar depression and major depressive disorder.
Top-line data from the company’s Phase 2 AMPLIFY-BD study in bipolar depression are expected in the second quarter of 2026, while data from the AMPLIFY study in major depressive disorder are expected in the third quarter.
What makes elunetirom noteworthy is its mechanism of action.
The drug is a brain-directed thyroid hormone receptor agonist designed to enhance energy production and neuroplasticity.
Rather than targeting traditional neurotransmitter pathways such as serotonin or dopamine, the therapy aims to improve mitochondrial function, cellular energy metabolism, and synaptic activity. Autobahn believes this approach could address the underlying biological dysfunction associated with depression.
The company is building on decades of research involving thyroid hormone biology in depression. Synthetic thyroid hormone has been used off-label for more than 50 years as an adjunctive treatment in both major depressive disorder and bipolar depression. Elunetirom is designed to capture the potential benefits of thyroid hormone activity in the brain while minimizing unwanted peripheral side effects, including cardiovascular and thyroid-related complications.
